ALWAYS WITH ME: Parents Talk About the Death of a Child

This all Canadian book, published August 2018, is an anthology of 31 essays written by bereaved parents.

10 of the essays are written by our own Bereaved Families of Ontario-Ottawa Region (BFO) bereaved parents, including the editor Donna Sharkey.

These parents were helped by BFO through attending our grief support programs. They share their stories of grief with the hope of helping newly bereaved parents.

When I lost my beloved son Chris in 2012, reading books about what I was experiencing helped me through the darkest time of my life. Learning about others and how they moved forward after such a tragic loss carried so much credibility.

I was given the opportunity to contribute to this book “Always With Me: Parents Talk about the Death of a Child”. I have done so, in the hopes that it will provide solace to those who have lost a child and insight to those supporting bereaved parents. ~ Barb Hayduk, Bereaved Families Ottawa contributor.

How does a parent cope after the death of a child? Each essay in Always With Me: Parents Talk about the Death of a Child reveals the experiences of parents who have lived through the devastation and upheaval of their child s death. Parents describe the maelstrom they face in their inner landscapes, coping strategies, and realigned place in the world. The writers in this collection of stories take on such topics as shock and isolation, despair, guilt, and how they attempt to make sense of their shattered lives. They offer insights into how their grief and loss are worked through, and why certain personal connections are severed, others strengthened. Importantly, they describe how, with lives altered indelibly, they try to press forward to find a new place in the world. This book is written for parents who have lost a child.  It is relevant to anyone who has experienced a significant loss.  Friends and family members, physicians, psychologists, counselors, social workers, those studying, researching or teaching about grief, and anyone wanting to learn and understand grief more fully will want to read this book.
