Annual Butterfly Release and Walk to Remember

Release a live butterfly in memory of a loved one….

Sunday, May 27th, 2018, 3:00-5:30pm

Location:  Beechwood National Cemetery of Canada

Each spring, Bereaved Families of Ottawa holds a special community memorial and fundraising event. The event is open to the public.  Pre-registration is required if you would like to purchase a butterfly to release in honour of your loved one.

The event begins with a memorial ceremony in the Sacred Space inside the Beechwood National Memorial Center.  This part of the event features live harp and flute music, with speakers on hand, and an opportunity for those present to speak the names of their loved ones lost.

From the memorial ceremony, we move to the hill overlooking the garden and pond, to share a symbolic release of live painted lady butterflies.  Butterflies are a symbol of hope and transformation.

Lastly, a memorial walk will take place giving individuals an opportunity to reflect and share memories as they enjoy the unique grounds of the Beechwood National Cemetery.  At your own pace, complete a full or partial figure 8 walk through the peaceful grounds of Beechwood.

Note:  This is an Annual Fundraiser for BFO.  We hope you will join us and bring your family and friends to support both you and BFO at this transformative event.

The Ottawa Sun has written an article about the Butterfly Walk.  Please read about it here.

The ancient Native legend tells us that:
If anyone desires a wish to come true,
they must capture a butterfly and whisper
that wish to it.  Since they make no sound, they can’t tell
anyone but the Great Spirit.  So by making the wish
and releasing the butterfly, it will be taken to
the heavens and be granted.
